We are excited to welcome Will Hartman to Junior Golf Nerd's Guest Features! Will is at the top of the junior golf scene right now, being ranked 14th in the nation and having a myriad of top finishes in elite junior golf tournaments across the country. Will is also signed to Vanderbilt University, where he will continue his golfing career later this fall. We really appreciate Will for his time, let's get right into it:
Question 1: Tell us more about yourself, your junior golf, and where you are right now.
Answer: My name is Will Hartman from Charlotte NC and I am committed to play golf at Vanderbilt University this fall.
Junior Golf Nerd: Will has put in a lot of hard work to reach his current position, we are very excited to follow his progress through college and see where he goes next!
Q2: How do you currently track your stats and data during practice and tournaments? Do you use specific tools, apps, or systems?
Answer: I use an app called up-game to track my statistics. I got to use this through the USNDP
JGN: Here, Will mentions the Upgame Golf by Trackman system that tracks statistics, analyzing strokes gained and dispersion patterns. Will gained access to Upgame through their partnership with the US National Development Program. Will is on the US National Junior Team for 2025.
Q3: What are the most important metrics you focus on to improve your game? How have these evolved as you've grown as a player?
Answer: I am not super into the stats of the game but it is cool to see the development and numbers behind my game. The stats I mainly focus on and practice are putting and short game.
JGN: This is interesting to hear, as it is important to note that not all juniors are very focused on stats and data. Even though Will is not very focused on the numbers behind the game, he still dedicates a majority of his practice routine to short game drills. For all junior golfers out there: it is important to practice short game!
Q4: You are ranked very well in many junior golf ranking systems(JGS, AJGA, etc.). What is your opinion on these rankings? Are they fair? Where can they be improved? Which one is the most fair and why?
Answer: I don’t know much about the rankings and how they work but I think they are somewhat fair.
JGN: Even though Will is ranked very highly in many rankings, he does not pay much attention to them. He works very hard and does a good job of blocking out the noise around him.
Q5: Take us through your typical training schedule. With more freedom and resources, how do you want to improve this in college?
Answer: I strength train in the winter and do more mobility in season and then try to practice golf either play or practice 5 times a week.
JGN: Will is extremely dedicated to his practice routine, and his efforts go far beyond what others see on the golf course. It is very important for all junior golfers to focus on strength training in the offseason and more mobility movements while in season. Following this balance, Will has been able to achieve a good blend of training in his golf.
Q6: What is your favorite junior golf tournament and why?
Answer: My favorite junior golf tournament is the Junior Invitational. The amenities and experience they provide for the players are amazing.
JGN: The Junior Invitational, played at Sage Valley, is consistently known as the most prestigious tournament among junior golfers, and Will is no different. We are glad to hear that Will has enjoyed his experience at the Junior Invitational!
Q7: What about the Vanderbilt makes you most excited?
Answer: I am excited to try and go and get better every single day at Vanderbilt.
JGN: Will is very dedicated to getting better every day, and will continue to do so. Vanderbilt certainly has the resources to facilitate that, and we wish Will the best of luck in his college career!
